There’s at least one deer stand visible in the woods behind our library. I think we’re the only library in the country that has a deer stand in its backyard.
LSU and SLU Pumpkin Carvings
I decided to try my hand at pumpkin carving for Halloween 2010. I chose to do a couple of football-themed pumpkins. First, I did a SLU pumpkin with the Lions’ Simmie Yarborough. Then I tackled an LSU-themed Patrick Peterson pumpkin. The skin on the SLU pumpkin was a little thicker, so the image didn’t show up as well as the one on the LSU pumpkin, but I like how they turned out.
Mrs. Lois’ Typewriter
Mrs. Lois brought her old typewriter to the library to use as a prop for Mrs. Louise’s book club meeting. It’s pretty cool. I think it would still work, too.
Rained Out at Prison View Golf Course
On the grounds of Louisiana State Penitentiary is Prison View Golf Course. It’s a nine-hole par 72 course than runs around 6,000 yards (“Welcome”).
It’s right down the road from the C. C. Dixon K-9 Training Center that was named after my great-grandpa. From the Houston Chronicle:
The idea for the course came from the inventive mind of Warden Burl Cain, who wanted to give his employees a reason to stay close to home.
Cain said he doesn’t play golf himself, but Angola has 1,800 employees.
About 600 people, including workers and their families, live inside prison grounds along B-Line Road. Every guard who lives on B-Line is a member of one or more immediate-response teams.
“Everyone’s happy at home,” said Cain, whose previous recreational contribution was a less daunting set of tennis courts, to go with the baseball fields and swimming pool. “And I have them here if something happens, so I’m happy too.” (Triplett)
I’ve been wanting to go back and play for a while and finally got a chance. When we finally arrived, it was raining heavily. We waited a little while, and the rain finally stopped. Fortunately, the course drains very fast, and I played (or attempted to play) a round.

National Library Week 2010
For National Library Week 2010, I dressed up as Drew Brees. I guess you can call me the perennial “gimme” character. I always wanted an excuse to try wearing that helmet.
Livingston Parish Fair 2010
The library once again set up a display at the Livingston Parish Fair along with all of the parish schools. I was asked to do it about a week or two ahead of time, so I had to get it done in a short amount of time. I originally wanted to paint the artists faces and libraries, but the projector I was using wasn’t working well as a mural painting aid, so I had to go the paper route. After the display was set up, I stopped by the Fair and snapped a picture.
While I was at the fair, I bought dinner that consisted of a Polish sausage po-boy, funnel cake, and Barq’s root beer. Anna wanted a po-boy and funnel cake too, so I bought her one of each. In fifteen minutes at the Fair, I spent nearly $30 for two po-boys and two funnel cakes. I left as fast as I could before they started to crack into my bank account.
